Vivo X20 Plus to launch Jan 24 with an in-display fingerprint sensor

The hotly anticipated Vivo X20 Plus has finally got a launch date. Vivo has confirmed that it will hold an event on Wednesday, January 24 in Beijing, China to finally launch the Vivo X20 Plus, the world’s first smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor. Vivo showed off the in-display fingerprint scanning technology at CES 2018, also confirming that the technology would soon be ready for mass-production. The Vivo X20 Plus, previously dubbed as Vivo X20 Plus UD, will pack a Synaptics Clear ID 9500 optical under-display fingerprint sensor to enable the technology, along with a full-HD+ 18:9 display.

In a Weibo post, Vivo shared the teaser featuring the name of the smartphone – X20 Plus, the time, date, and venue for the launch event, along with a “Unlock the Future” tagline. The launch event is scheduled to start at 7:30 pm CST (10 pm IST, January 24). Accompanying them is an image of a whirl, resembling the fingerprint mark on the display of Vivo X20 Plus. Apart from this, the teaser doesn’t divulge further details such as specifications and design of the Vivo X20 Plus. However, the rumours are rife that the price of the Vivo X20 Plus will be set at 3,998 yuan, which is roughly Rs 40,000. It is worth mentioning that the Vivo X20 Plus was earlier rumoured to be launched on January 25.

The Vivo X20 Plus, initially called the Vivo X20 Plus UD where UD stood for Under-Display, has been leaked multiple times where almost all of its specifications were revealed. Moreover, the smartphone passed through TENAA certification, which further corroborated its specifications. According to the listing found on certification website, the Vivo X20 Plus will sport a 6.43-inch OLED display having 2160×1080 pixels resolution, a 2.2GHz octa-core processor paired with 4GB of RAM. While the processor model is unspecified in the listing, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC is expected to power the internals of this variant of Vivo X20 Plus, similar to its original variant. The Vivo X20 Plus is the world’s first mass-produced smartphone that features an in-display fingerprint sensor display manufactured by Synaptics. The Synaptics Clear ID 9500 optical under-display fingerprint sensor was earlier claimed to go into production on a mass scale to supply at least 70 million units by the end of this year.

As for the cameras, the Vivo X20 Plus is said to come with a dual camera setup on the rear, including one 12-megapixel and one 5-megapixel shooter. On the front, the smartphone is expected to house a 12-megapixel camera. It is further expected to pack a 3800mAh battery, along with the standard set of connectivity options including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 4G, and GPS among others. The Vivo X20 Plus is said to pack 128GB of inbuilt storage that can be further expanded via microSD card up to 256GB. The smartphone will be available in Black Gold, Champagne Gold, Rose Gold, and Matte Black colour options.
